Attempt at The Surprise by Claude-Marie Dubufe



I was online and seen a woman use this method of painting half a canvas and creating an outline of a portrait with thread. I really liked the idea so I decided to try it out myself however it didn't turn out as well as i hoped it would have. i know that i went wrong with the thickness of the thread as mine is clearly too thin. i am hoping to purchase some thicker thread and have a second attempt as i do think it'll look good if done correctly.

The descent from the Cross is a panel painting by the Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden created in 1435. In the full painting Christ is being lowered from the cross after being crucified however I focused on the weeping nun in the back ground. I have started an oil painting as well as a pencil drawing from the same reference picture as seen below.

Personal Investigation Learner Statement

Explain the MAIN IDEA(S) for the development of your responses
The theme I have decided to explore is “love and heartbreak in 14th to 17th century art”, and I’m wanting to use a range of techniques to create multiple outcomes, which may lead to the final development of a style or idea for use in a final outcome.

When given the chance to choose my own idea for a self-identified brief, immediately I thought of the renaissance/baroque era of art as it has always been my favourite because of how detailed and intricate it can be, as well as the stories each painting tells. However, just looking at 14th to 17th century art is too broad of a topic, so I started looking for ideas on the internet for what I could explore. Looking at photos and paintings it became clear that the theme of emotion is a main point in each piece of artwork. This gave me the idea to explore the theme of love and heartbreak in the style of the pre 17th century.
Outline your PLAN(S) for the development of your work
For my exploration I am going to split my sketchbook into two sections, one being love which will express the happiness and good emotions love provides, and the other being heartbreak which will be centred more around sadness and bad emotions you feel during a heartbreak. I will decide eventually whether to bring the two ideas together to create one final piece or whether to keep them separate and create two pieces as a kind of series of emotions. I will research artists and old masters, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Caravaggio and apply any knowledge I gather to my work and try-outs. I want to try out new medias such as oil paint and clay for sculpting as I am using this topic to expand my skills and use of medias, and hopefully I will find out the best methods to suit me.
Describe the CONTEXT (influences, purposes and meanings) of your work
The meaning of this theme is to explore the deeper emotions of love and heartbreak evoked by paintings. Art styles have changed so much over the centuries and new movements such as the post-modernism movement that we are in right now can be full of emotion for some people, but personally, I don’t have the same feelings and wonder about modern art like I do with baroque or renaissance. I want to be able to use the styles of old masters and various artists in order to create an outcome that can elicit such a feeling and will have its own story. My subject matters for my chosen topic will be humans in the pre 17th century style. I would also like to try and incorporate more modern people with an antique twist in some sort of way just as a little experiment, and maybe by doing this I can expand my appreciation for modern art.
REFLECT on your work critically as it progresses and on its completion
I have experience already with some methods that can used for this theme, I definitely have room to improve though, but through the exploration of this theme I can improve my skill because they are a large part of creating work in the pre-17th century style. I can first-hand explore this topic as I am very privileged to live in a city with so much art so I can easily take photos from galleries of artworks and sculptures. Furthermore, I already have first-hand evidence from my trip to London as I took many photos of the style I want to explore just for personal use, but they can easily be incorporated into my self-identified brief.

London Trip

On January 23rd, I went on a school trip with my A Level art class to London. I took a plethora of photos which you can see on this post. I printed the majority onto contact sheets and presented them in my sketchbook. I really enjoyed my time in London and I gained so much inspiration for my personal investigation and my City in a Box topic.


This photo is of my sketchbook page about Kara Walker's Fons Americanus Foutain in the Tate Modern Gallery. It was beautiful to see and was absolutely ginormous! It was cool that there was so many small aspects to the fountain and you had to walk the whole way round to spot every single little but deliberate detail. Although I personally don't like to sculpt myself, I can still appreciate the beauty of this fountain and how much hard work must've went into its creation.
The three smaller drawings are quick first hand observations I made.

 This next page is all about the National Gallery. I really love older paintings, especially portraits so being in this gallery and seeing paintings from some amazing artists up close was absolutely dreamy. On this page I have showcased a couple of brochures, pictures I took of the architecture and a few snaps of some paintings I loved. Currently, I am working on a small canvas using paint and thread to recreate the portrait of the lady that I have shown on this page.

Personal investigation pages


This is the first completed page for my personal investigation. It's just a simple mood board with a few pictures I found online that gave me a few ideas on how to start my PI. I would love to add more to it and I have found so many more pictures and ideas however, I relied on using the schools printer and due to being out of school because of Covid-19, I haven't been able to print off any new pictures for my sketch book. What I will do is upload all the photos onto my laptop and create some sort of collage/online mood board so I can show you the sort of vibe/mood i'm aiming for in my PI.

This page isn't finished yet, but you can sort of see what my plan is for it. This is the beginning of my exploration into the Old Masters as they are a crucial part of my PI. These first two pages will be on Peter Paul Rubens and Sandro Botticelli. I am looking at one of their paintings each and hoping that I can learn some new techniques from them.

I found this picture on pinterest and it really intrigued me so I decided to paint it myself. I used a canvas board as my surface and used oil paint as my medium. I have another post about the process of this painting (https://aimeeshieldsart.blogspot.com/2020/05/painting-timelapse.html). I think what intrigued me most was the emotion I felt, you can see the amount of pain in this mans eyes. I hope that I will eventually find the original painting so I can read about its backstory but for now I will just interpret this picture my own way. The only thing I can think if as to why the man has a nail in his head, is that this picture is possibly religious? The blood pouring from his head makes me think this could possibly be a painting of Jesus as he wore a crown of thorns before his death. My painting may not be an exact copy of the reference however I am still made up with the outcome as I think it still conveys the same emotions, which to me is the most important factor.

Painting Time-lapse

This painting took quite a while to complete. I painted it over 2 different days. On the first day it didn't seem to be working out very well, the way the paint was mixing and turning out on the canvas just wasn't right so I stopped painting on day 1. This video was taken on the second day, which turned out a lot better. This was also my first time painting with oil. I enjoyed how easy it was to layer and blend the paints without stressing over how quick the paint is drying so I will definitely be using them again.

I am currently working on a page in my sketchbook to express my PI idea a lot more presentable and better than this scruffy piece of paper, but until then this is what I've got to offer in terms of ideas :)
